Also I've been re-reading Tweak, and tried to rewatch Beautiful Boy (this time without my ex boyfriend who felt the need to verbally express all his thoughts and critiques in real time to the inevitable chagrin of everyone around him), and my heart always always breaks when I hear this story
The neurobiology of addiction is rich and fascinating, but it's also so hard sometimes to actually wrap your head around the fact that drug overdose is the leading cause of death for people between 18 to 50 years old or something
You have this mental image of a drug addict, the streets that you avoid, the people that you are afraid to look in the eye
But Nic's story is so honest, so true, so unadulterated, so pure
The neurobiology is fascinating, the neurobiologists are brilliant and also equally as fascinating
From aplysia to optogenetics to MEAs, it's all very interesting
But it's still not enough unless you actually have the courage to see it for what it is and them for who they are.
A disease. Real people. With real lives and families and people who love them and cry for them and miss them and just want to give them a hug and say it's okay, I'm here baby I'm here
It's never a bad idea to just listen sometimes
